7 Days of the Week

Years ago, people would see the Sun on Sunday, the Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday, and Saturn on Saturday. These would appear to them one day after the other over and over again. That's why a week has seven days.

The days are also specifically named after the star, moon, and planets they saw. For example, Thursday: ORIGIN Old English Thu(n)resdæg [day of thunder,] translation of late Latin Jovis dies ‘day of Jupiter’ (god associated with thunder): compare with Dutch donderdag and German Donnerstag.
