Hot dogs and hamburgers are based on German traditional dishes. But, the modern form is so popular here in the US, that it is often considered American food.
Hot dogs original name is actually frankfurter, which comes from the city, Frankfurt in Germany. There, pork sausages were served in a bun and are similar to the modern hotdogs. These hot dogs, known as Frankfurter Würstcahen were even known since the 13th century. The Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian II, had even served it during his coronation.
