Five Flamingo Facts


  1. A flamingo can eat only when its beak is upside-down.
  2. Young are born white and grey and don't turn pink until until two years.
  3. The Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) pink colours come from the shrimplike crustaceans which they eat.
  4. The Andean Flamingos (Phoenicopterus andinus) are migrant birds and can travel 700 miles a day
  5. In Ancient Rome, flamingo tongues were a delicacy.
