Twitter and Facebook mentions banned in France

Since May 27, the French government has banned the mention of 'Twitter' and 'Facebook' unless the mention is about the companies itself.

Their reason? Apparently, mentioning social networks like Facebook and Twitter by name, was against a 1992 degree, which disallowed surreptitious advertising. A spokesperson for the CSA (Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel) explained that it would "give preference to Facebook, which is wroth billions of dollars, when there are many other social networks that are struggling for recognition."

For example, the phrase "follow us on Twitter" or "Like us on Facebook" is common in American broadcasting, but are no longer tolerated on French channels. They can still say "find us on social networks," though, but the websites cannot be mentioned by name.
